SHOEBURY MATTERS – 17.01.2021

New rapid COVID-19 testing site to open at Shoebury youth centre – From Tuesday 19 January 2021, a new ‘lateral flow device’ (LFD) rapid testing site is planned to open in Shoebury youth centre for those who do not have symptoms of COVID-19. The new centre will be situated in the main hall at Shoebury youth centre, Delaware Road, SS3 9NS, and will enable people to get results within one hour. It will be open from 2 to 6pm on Tuesday, and will then be open from 8am to 7pm from Wednesday onwards, seven days a week. It will accommodate 500 LFD tests each day. Testing at LFD sites is available for everyone without symptoms but are by appointment only and bookings should be made online. If you are not able to book online, you can call the Southend-on-Sea Borough Council COVID response helpline on 01702 212497 from 9am on Monday (line is open 9am to 5pm weekdays). Anyone with symptoms should book a test via the NHS Test and Trace App, or at GOV.UK.

Grants to Help Residents Self-Isolate – If you have been asked to self-isolate because you or someone in your household has tested positive for COVID it is important you do so to stop the spread. You can apply to your local council for a £500 one-off support payment so you have income if you are unable to work from home. Contact your local council: https://www.essex.gov.uk/test-and-trace-support-payment

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council has spent £190,000 to fund free school meal vouchers over the last two weeks. In addition, the council will fund free schools meals through the February half-term via the winter COVID grant scheme funded by the Government as announced before Christmas. The Council will be working directly with schools to issue free school meals vouchers for the February half term and Easter breaks. The council has also provided the Southend Emergency Fund with £25,000 of its own funding and a further £39,000 from its winter COVID grant – the fund has grants of up to £3,000 to give out to organisations working with clinically extremely vulnerable people and vulnerable families. For more information and an application form, visit the ‘Southend Emergency Fund website’.

Clare and Robert Davis of the Salvation Army have asked us to relay their sincere thanks to the local community for the donations of food, Christmas presents & other items which allowed them to continue their important work over the festive period. Unlike the SRA, they are able to help local residents with emergency provisions, such as food, toiletries, baby’s milk & nappies etc. plus give aid with Utility top ups. The Salvation Army is in Frobisher Way between the Parsons Barn & North Shoebury Surgery. You can contact them on 01702 – 291500 but PLEASE do not ring them for anything to do with the Vaccines, as they have no input into the appointment system

From Peter Lovett – We have found it very difficult to arrange group cleans for some time now but I know many of our volunteers have been going out in their own bubbles cleaning the beaches, roads & even clearing weeds from the commons etc. A member of our Facebook page entered a post that encouraged others to do likewise, so I am hoping when we are all allowed to continue, we will have many more volunteers willing to participate in our popular beach/park cleans. Ps We have been told that our three Shoeburyness Councillors have managed to secure £2m funding for East Beach. We do not have full details yet, but this should include George Street Toilets, beach steps, cycle path, planting trees, car park, Cafe and we assume – much more. It is good to see that Shoebury is at last being recognised as a major contributor to the Council tax fund!

Lockdown does not stop us looking up – See below the new trees at the end of Maplin Way and the commence of the construction on Shoebury Common North
