HARP’s First-Ever Southend Pier Dash is Almost Here! – HARP, Southend’s homeless charity, has now filled all of the slots for their first-ever Southend Pier Dash on Sunday 27th March 2022. The event is sponsored by Ipeco and will see 100 participants run one mile along Southend’s iconic pier, the longest pleasure pier in the world, raising funds to help local people overcome homelessness for good.

BBQ’S IN SOUTHEND (From Peter Lovett)

There was a lot of discussions at the Council Chamber where it was proposed that BBQ’s should be banned on all beaches other than East Beach & The Old Gas Works beach down to Camper Road. This was opposed by both West Shoebury & Shoeburyness Ward Councillors because of the huge amount of damage caused in the past and the many serious accidents & fires that have occurred. You can listen to all the comments made by clicking on the link below but it was eventually agreed by everyone that they should go out for Consultation to ban BBQ’s on all beaches & East Beach greenpace. With the huge investment proposed for East Beach, including new car park, lighting, new playground, benches, tables, toilets etc., it would be nice to support the whole area to ensure it does not deteriorate like it has done over recent years and cause food to be left and creating vermin to flood the space. It will take a few months for the consultation to be prepared.

We have been fighting for some support from the CCG saying we are now in crisis with regard to a shortage of doctors in Shoebury. We know that our doctors need our support, rather than our criticism, so why not join the above group and let them know what you think, so that they are fully aware of the problems you are suffering.

Working with our Ward Councillors we have just been told that the Hydraulic Fitness Suite will be started next week and should be completed within 7 to 10 days, so another positive step for Shoebury:

This will surely add the popularity of this common, now that the new Children’s palyground has been such a success. Still to come is the Solar Powered Audio Talking Bench & the planting of Memorial Trees.

If you look at the list provided there is a huge number planted down Delaware Road. in Shoebury.

Explore the night sky with the reopening of Southend Planetarium! – Residents and visitors are invited to explore the wonders of the night sky as Southend-on-Sea City Council is pleased to announce the reopening of the Southend Planetarium. Public shows are run every Saturday and Sunday at 2pm, and guests must be aged seven or over. Each show seats around 20 guests, so we recommend contacting the museum team in advance to confirm seat availability to avoid disappointment.

Ps every time I visit the Planetarium I am amazed!

East Beach wedding – Last Thursday I was surprised to see so much activity on East Beach. They were filming an ‘East Enders’ wedding!

Last Newsletter  – This may be the last newsletter sent by me. As advised last week I have resigned as secretary of the SRA and Peter received a good number of volunteers to join the committee. I will be pursuing other interests but mainly entertaining care homes. For a taste of the type of song we will be singing see the parody I have written below –

Me and my shadow strolling down the Esplanade

Me and my shadow dreaming of sand castles that we made

Then we stop and watch the passing ships

While seagulls swoop with one eye on our chips

Just me and my shadow strolling down the Esplanade

Me and my shadow walking up and down the pier

Me and my shadow Gas works there on Canvey look so clear

Then we hear a train on that tiny track

We smile and wave but nobody waves back

Just me and my shadow walking up and down the pier

Me and my shadow munching doughnuts, prawns then rock

Me and my shadow eating Rossi’s ice cream by the block

In our fancy hats that say ‘kiss me quick’

We eat candy floss then we crawl home feeling sick

Just me and my shadow, we’ll be back again next week
