SHOEBURY MATTERS – 23.05.2021

BLUE FLAGS – Southend-on-Sea has been commended for the quality and management of its beaches after five beaches were awarded the Blue Flag and all eight beaches were given a Seaside Award. One third of beaches in the east of England which have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag Award are located in Southend, with five of the 15 awards coming to Southend beaches. East Beach, Shoebury Common Beach, Thorpe Bay Beach, Three Shells Beach and Westcliff Beach have all retained their Blue Flag this summer, matching the previous year’s record of five award winning beaches.

All Southend beaches have been presented with a Seaside Award by Keep Britain Tidy. The Seaside Award recognises beaches that are well-managed and maintained. This means that of the 20 Seaside Awards awarded in the east of England, almost half belong to Southend.

The 100th Mayor of Southend-on-Sea has taken the chains as Cllr Margaret Borton was inaugurated as first citizen of the Borough. The annual Mayor Making ceremony took place on Thursday 20 May, attended by a small number of council officials, family members and friends, and live streamed to the public, due to Covid-19 health and safety measures.

Libraries – A new campaign is set to launch in Southend libraries which looks to tackle loneliness and support mental health during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the town’s recovery. The ‘Read, Talk, Share’ campaign will see every library in Southend provided with books from the Reading Well collections to support mental health for children, young people, and adults. There are also e-books and e-audio books available to read and listen to online through the library’s digital service, ‘BorrowBox.’ For more information visit https://reading-well.org.uk/

SWANS AT GUNNERS PARK

Caught these four leaving the lake and crossing the path to the stream at 6.00 Friday morning. They are such intelligent creatures. They have realised that, due to previous experiences with dogs off leads, they would rather spend the day in a safer environment. It looks like the parent at the rear is telling the kids to get a move on.
