SHOEBURY MATTERS – 26.09.2021

Women’s Tour cycle race – On Thursday 7 October this prestigious event will start at East Beach, Shoeburyness, travelling through the rural roads of south Essex, before finishing along the seafront just past the Arches cafes. This world-class sporting event – which is free to watch live – will potentially bring large crowds of avid cycling fans to the town to witness the start and finish of the race.

HOSPITAL – COVID – NHS UPDATE: 23/09/21 – The most urgent issue that came out of this meeting is about trying to reduce the pressure on our A&E centres. Southend A&E is dealing with 310 cases every day and many could be directed towards our doctors, pharmacies or the 111 system. They have a system now with 111 where they can book you a slot in A&E where you can then go straight through. Those waiting for operations etc over one year have now been reduced from 8,500 to 4,000 which is still not good enough, but they have brought in a mobile operating theatre at each location to assist. Cancer referrals back to 2 weeks. Ambulances are also suffering extra workload with calls up 20%, but Southend is the best in the whole of Essex when it comes to major responses. Still long waiting times at all hospitals.

Doctors are up to 68% face to face appointments, but this various from area to area. Anglain Ruskin are providing extra places for doctors and efforts are being made in an attempt to persuade them to work locally, rather than all go to London. In the winter, things are going to be tough and residents are advised to get the Flu jab this year, because with very few cases last year, resistance is low.

We have 70 Covid patients in our three hospitals, with the most seriously ill unvaccinated. Southend has given out 237,933 doses (8/12/2020 to 9/9/21) with 80% having their first dose and 71% having their second dose.

Anybody aged 16 or over and live in England, can book an appointment online to receive a coronavirus vaccine or call 119 free of charge, anytime between 7am and 11pm seven days a week.

Pfizer will be mainly used on the booster jab and you have to wait to be called.
