SHOEBURY MATTERS – 20.06.2020

Volunteers –We have had a very good response for volunteers to help distribute the September magazine. This means will not have to pay for the services of the Royal Mail, can reduce the number of adverts and have more space for articles

Garrison development – Attached are the Frequently Asked Questions now showing on the Garrison gardens website. Our Chairman spoke directly with the NHS about them building a new Health Centre and this is a copy of their reply: “I would suggest that the developer’s proposals are speculative and fairly common for such developments. No conversations have been had between us and the developer and we were surprised to see the headlines in the Echo last month indicating the site of a new Health Centre”.

We also spoke to Councillor Wakefield who is keen to see a new Health Centre built. This was his reply: “It seems that they have posted an assumption as a sweetener, I brought this up with Cllr Trevor Harp who is overseeing a lot of development with the NHS including the Shoeburyness Health Centre and he said that no one has come forward to offer some land on the Garrison Estate to build the new Centre.”..

Birth appointments / registration: The Council will be registering births again from Monday 22 June. National legislation brought in due to COVID-19 only allowed for death appointments to be conducted over the phone and therefore there is a backlog. We are contacting parents chronologically who had appointments that were cancelled due to lock down. The website has been also been updated asking for parents of babies born in February and March (who had not made an appointment) to make contact with us. We will be using targeted social media, posters in supermarkets, and contacts in the NHS and children’s centres to raise awareness.

Sandra Sturrock sent this photo of the ‘posh’ new steps at the Beach Huts on East Beach

Yellow Diamond – Close to these steps is a yellow diamond. Perhaps you have wondered why it is there?

TV licence scam – If you receive a text or emails asking you to renew your TV licence and there is a link – delete and report as scam.
